1932 Lucy Henriques wills land and a trust fund for a medical facility at Mahahikilua in Waimea. 1964 Northern Hawaii Hospital Corporation (NHHC) forms to plan an acute-care hospital. Parker Ranch owner Richard Smart commits to a new hospital, but agreement with the State and community cannot be reached as to where and how it should be built. 1969 Lucy Henriques Medical Center (LHMC) is chartered as an alternative and phase-in for the NHHC. 1977 LHMC opens freestanding Emergency Room, X-Ray, Lab and Medical Offices. 1987 North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) incorporates as a non-profit 501(C)3, kicks off grass roots effort to provide access to acute-care services within the “golden hour.” 1988 NHCH Advisory Board forms with representatives from North Hawaii communities. 1989 State Legislature appropriates $824,000 for plan and design of NHCH. 1990 NHCH preliminary planning calls for 50-bed, acute-care facility, estimated cost at $25 million; Legislature passes Resolution of Intent to fund half of construction. 1991 Legislature approves $12.5 million grant-in-aid to be matched by private funds. Capital Campaign begins. LHMC pledges $2 million. 1992 NHCH fund raising reaches goal, matching State’s $12.5 million. 1993 State Certificate of Need (CON) is granted. Architectural design process begins. 1994 NHCH ground breaking and construction starts. State releases appropriation. 1996 Construction is completed, and NHCH opens in May, integrating blended medicine into a beautiful and uniquely-designed hospital setting. Management agreement is signed with Adventist Health Care. 1997 NHCH purchases Kohala Home Health Care. 1998 Solution Point recognizes NHCH as "Best in Class" for hospitals under 350 beds for Customer Satisfaction in Food, Housekeeping and Total Process. NHCH earns JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) accreditation and is ranked #1 in National Survey. 1999 LHMC and NHCH merge. North Hawaii Dialysis, owned and operated by Lucy Henriques Medical Center, merges with and is operated by North Hawaii Community Hospital. 2000 "Campaign for the New Century" is launched to upgrade and expand Imaging Department. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 1.5 Tesla Unit and Four-Slice CT Scanner are acquired. 2001 Modern Maturity magazine lists NHCH as one of the nation’s 15 “Hospitals with Heart.” NHCH ranks #1 in HMSA’s Hospital Quality and Service Recognition Program in the small hospital category and receives full three year accreditation from JCAHO. 2002 The Association of Healing Health Care Projects Organizational Award acknowledges NHCH’s commitment to the ethic of “Healing Ourselves, Our Relationships and our Communities.” 2003 $6.5 million Imaging Campaign is completed. The Hospitals for a Healthy Environment H2E Award for Environmental Pollution Prevention Efforts is received. Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Health and Human Services, visits and speaks at NHCH. Statewide award is earned for patient safety protocols within our Surgical Services Department. The Waimea Women’s Center and the North Hawaii Ohana Care, a private-duty division of the Home Care Department, are launched. 2004 NHCH is recognized by the Governance Institute for maintaining the highest standards of healthcare through an ongoing pursuit of excellence in governance. Professional Research Consultants Five Star Customer Service Award is received for scoring in the top 10% for “Excellent” responses in Emergency Services and Radiology Services. Richard Smart Big Island Community Achievement Award for Environmental Protection is received. Hospital Annex Building opens to house Kohala Home Health, North Hawaii Ohana Care and Labman. NHCH Board authorizes the development of the Hawaii Heart Brain Center (HHBC) at North Hawaii Community Hospital. 2005 The Hawaii Heart Brain Center program to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and neurovascular disease is launched. Clinical affiliation with the #1 heart hospital in the nation, The Cleveland Clinic, and partnership with The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu are announced. The American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines- Coronary Artery Disease Initial Performance Achievement Award, a first in Hawaii and one of only 36 hospitals in the nation, is received. HeartMath Stress Relief Program is launched as part of the HHBC’s community health education program. NHCH is recognized by the Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) partner program for efforts to improve the environmental performance of the healthcare sector. Statewide Emergency Preparedness Exercise is held at NHCH. Medallion presentation program is launched for all new employees. HMSA recognizes NHCH as ‘The Best Hospital” in its size category. |
