Hospital Relaxes H1N1 Flu Readiness Measures

May 15, 2009

North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) is pleased to report that we have adjusted our level of swine flu (H1N1) preparedness. The Centers for Disease Control and our state public health authorities have advised us that the swine flu illness has been much less severe than originally thought and is much more like regular seasonal flu. This is great news and as a result, we have scaled down our readiness to levels typical to the usual flu outbreaks that occur in the winter months.

Check-in stations at both the emergency room and main hospital entrances have been replaced with signs asking everyone entering the Hospital to sanitize their hands and to wear a surgical mask if they are coughing. A container of masks is located next to the signs.

Visitors and families, including children, are once again allowed into the facility without extra restrictions.

The yellow tent outside the emergency room entrance has been removed.

NHCH will continue to monitor the situation in the community and state of Hawaii in case we need to re-institute any of the pandemic readiness measures. The Hospital will be debriefing staff, looking for lessons learned and documenting what we did so we’ll be even better prepared next time there is a similar need.

Mahalo for your help and cooperation.
